“Those who can’t do, teach.” This old saying

“Those who can’t do, teach.” This old saying is a tricky one, right? I would argue this isn’t true and my personal road to finding the teachers mat is a winding one. For me, it happened that I loved what I practiced so much that I just wanted to learn more. So I signed up for a yoga teacher training in 2014.

I was at this transition time in my life where I wasn’t planning on teaching - I just wanted to learn more and completely immerse myself in the practice and the lifestyle of yoga. I had just moved to Sweden a few months earlier, and was working for EY in Copenhagen. That summer I decided to take a pause from working to study my Masters in Lund. With a little bit of time in between I packed a bag and headed to Asheville, NC for a month long immersive 200+ hour yoga teacher training.

I loved everything about Asheville. Let me tell you this place, nestled in the mountains of NC, has a vibe. There are people biking to work in a suit with a yoga mat strapped across their back. How cool is that? During my training I lived in a house with other women enrolled in the training. Every morning we began the day early and headed to the yoga studio to learn. Every evening we wobbled home, exhausted and sore from the day, but filled to the brim with inspiration to learn more.

To say this experience changed my life would almost feel like an understatement. I learned so much about myself, about yoga and a way to view the world around me. Living our yoga we found ourselves deep in conversations about the world, healthy living and life. It may sound cliche but I chose to be a practicing vegan for many years after this month. It wasn’t until my pregnancy with Elias (in 2019) that I started consuming dairy products again. And am still a happy vegetarian to this day 🙏🏽

This month of deep introspection was such a beautiful bubble that I’ve only experienced once in my life. Maybe one day again after the small children years 🙏🏽 Continued in the comments…

Yoga came into my life many years ago. This fact ages me - but I’m ok with that ❤️ I met yoga just about 20 years ago. To be honest I don’t remember the first time I stepped on a yoga mat. At that point it probably wasn’t even a yoga mat - but a training mat at home. I started with stretching to help myself feel less stiff in my body when I was spending my afternoons behind the boat and on the trampoline. I practiced sporadically during high school, but the first yoga class I can remember was actually freshman year of college. I’m 17 years old and signed up for a yoga course offered for credit. Yes, yoga was offered for class credit - how cool was that? I remember looking around the room at all of the different sorts of people who signed up for this “easy class” and remember laughing to myself because it really wasn’t that easy at all. I wasn’t hooked yet though. I finished the course, and continued practicing here and there. But I must have been talking about yoga to my family, because I clearly remember my grandmother gave me a @rodneyyeeyoga DVD. Has anyone else seen one of these? 🙏🏽 I’d practice in my dorm room from time to time. After college I moved home, and joined a local yoga studio in Lake Mary. Now is when my life forever changed. After my first yoga class I was completely hooked. From the first time I sat up from Shavasana, I was in awe how 60 minutes can leave you feeling so refreshed and so “new”. I was under a lot of stress during that period of my life. I was studying for my CPA exam (it’s like the BAR law exam but for accountants) and working a 70-80 hour work week for EY. But with all of the pressure to “succeed”, I was able to find peace in the stillness on my yoga mat. I fell in love with yoga.

🍁 As I was driving the other day, I was talking

🍁 As I was driving the other day, I was talking to Elias and asked him to look out the window and tell me what he saw. He responded in awe, "LOOK Mamma, SO beautiful!" We were driving past trees of reds and oranges, greens and browns, and the beauty was so obvious that even a four year old could embrace it.

I feel so thankful to live in a place with abundant nature. Where we can be in the forest within 15 minutes - exploring and learning. Pausing and noticing nature is a beautiful way to practice mindfulness.

Next time you are commuting - whether you are on public transport, biking, or driving - take a moment to look around. Look up from your phone, unplug from your podcast, and just look around. Take a deep breathe and see what you notice? Maybe you'll be surprised with how you feel!
